Description

Abstract Wood composite panels are often affected by molds in wet or humid environments. One control method for prevention of mold growth in houses is the use of mold-resistant panels. In this study, a biological technology and production process were developed using naturally mold-resistant wood species to improve the durability of panels against mold and decay. The results showed that three-layer panels made with white or black spruce strands in the surface layers, and aspen strands in the core layer in different ratios, were mold resistant. The average mold infection rating on white spruce heartwood-faced panels was only 1.0 after 8 weeks of exposure to high humidity environmental conditions; meanwhile, aspen panels (serving as control panels) were seriously infected by molds, with an overall average mold infection rate of 4.7 under the same conditions. The physical and mechanical properties of panels made with various proportions of sapwood and heartwood strands of white or black spruce in the surface layers, and aspen strands in the core layer, were similar or inferior to pure aspen panels. These panels were slightly resistant to white-rot fungi, but not resistant to brown-rot fungi. Panels with white or black spruce in the surface layers had similar mechanical properties, mold resistance, and decay resistance.
